Standards and guidelines for the design and placement of TCDs can be found in documents such as the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD; Federal Highway Administration, 2003), Traffic Control Devices Handbook (Pline, 2001), and A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, 2001). The human factors involved in the design and use of TCDs are discussed in the Traffic Control Devices Handbook (Hanscom & Dewar, 2001).
