ABSTRACT

Implantable drug delivery systems offer benefits over repetitive administration of conventional drug therapy by providing unattended continuous delivery within the therapeutic window. Controlled implantable drug delivery avoids the highly variable peak and trough concentra tions often seen after immediate-release dosing. Alleviation of this peak and trough serum pro file by maintenance of a continuous drug concentration can result in enhanced drug efficacy and minimized side effects. Patient compliance is also a benefit of continuous dosing with these implants.
