ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION Living organisms produce organic matter, the material that gives form and func tion to life. Organic matter is rich in chemical energy and is a crucial source of energy and nutrients for many forms of living organisms. Only a small portion of the organic matter produced escapes consumption by organisms near the ground surface or in the water column to become incorporated into sediments.
