III. FAILURE MECHANISMS A. Continuum Models and Bifurcation The long column discussed in Section II is a continuum model. In such a model, the behavior of the material can be examined without detailed discussion or knowledge of the microstructure. In the continuum models discussed here, the analysis seeks to identify a transition in mechanical behavior analogous to the transition from elastic to plastic behavior in steel.
