ABSTRACT
In this chapter the substances from which documents are prepared and the techniques which are used to test these materials are considered. It is possible only to describe in outline the make-up of paper, inks and other materials; discussion of the principles of the methods of their examination is also brief, but special processes and the apparatus required for their application are dealt with in Chapter 10.
