ABSTRACT

There exist many natural composites. Wood and many other plant tissues contain the cellulose chain polymer in a matrix of lignin, a phenol-propane polymer, and other organic compounds in a type of cellular structure (Figure 9.1). The load-bearing parts of the human body are in essence composites composed of the fibrous tissue, ligaments, which are cords as strong as rope, and which are attached to the bones, thereby binding the bone segments together.
