ABSTRACT
At this point it may be prudent to introduce the concept of a phase in order to better understand the classes of matter. We sometimes erroneously speak of crystalline and amorphous phases when referring to gases, liquids, and solids, which are the three states of matter. It is thus tempting to call these states of matter the three phases of matter. But this is not quite correct, as will become apparent in the following discussion.
