ABSTRACT

For the purpose of groundwater utilization, geological formations can be classified according to their hydraulic properties into aquifers, aquitards, and aquicludes. 12 Formations that contain and transmit a significant amount of water are called aquifers. Formations that are semi-permeable are known as aquitards. Those that practically do not transmit water are aquicludes. For convenience, several layers can be lumped into a single one based on their similar hydraulic properties. We also note that these definitions are only qualitative. Economical judgement of groundwater utilization, such as the rate of yield and cost of extraction for a certain purpose, can play a part in the definition.
