ABSTRACT
Aluminum is produced by the electrolytic reduction of aluminum oxide. Approximately 18 million tons of primary metal is produced each year. About 1.5 million tons are used per year for beverage cans alone, of which about 75% is comprised of recycled metal. The energy required for recycling is about 5% of that required for electrolytic reduction from aluminum oxide.
