ABSTRACT

During the preliminary design of any structure or facility the potential problem of corrosion should be considered for two important reasons. The first is economics and the second is conservation.

Economic losses, both direct and indirect, result from the weakening or sudden failure of piping, tanks, structures, metal components of machines, ship's hulls, marine structures, bridges, towers, etc. As can be seen all types of construction and/or manufacturing facilities have the potential of being affected. These losses sustained by industry, by governmental agencies, and by the military amount to billions of dollars annually.
