ABSTRACT
Disturbance on a worldwide basis is becoming more intense, and impacts are being felt on a global scale. The accumulation of C02 in the atmo~ sphere, acid deposition, desertification resulting from overgrazing and cropping submarginal farmland, clear cutting of tropical rain forests, and drastic disturbances associated with mining are disturbances that will affect the quality of life well into the next century.
