ABSTRACT

It is well recognized that wear is closely related to friction and lubrication. Both friction and wear arise from surface interaction in rubbing, one being detected and measured as a force and the other by loss of material or change of surface condition. Lubrication is used to reduce the friction and wear by introducing an appropriate substance between the surfaces, thus affecting the interaction. The recognition of a close relationship between friction, wear, and lubrication led to the adoption of the term tribology for the unified approach to the subject. Tribology is defined as "the science and technology of interacting surfaces in relative motion and practices related thereto" (Dorison and Ludema, 1985).
