ABSTRACT

The planning function in maintenance work identifies not only what is required, but how it should be accomplished. The former involves identification of the problem, its location, and its priority. The latter includes the specification of the methods to be used and the manning requirements. Methods to be used include the identification of the material and tool requirements as well as standard times in connection with the work. In the previous chapter, the development of standard times was discussed. In this chapter, we review procedures in identifying the materials and their cost for a specific maintenance work order. Careful planning in the selection and control of maintenance materials presents an important consideration in a sound maintenance engineering management program. Typically, maintenance materials represent 40-50% of total maintenance cost in U.S. industry.
