ABSTRACT
The ignored failure mode during engineering design was doomed to lead to later surprising consequences. Even before the Tacoma Narrows Bridge was completed, engineers were surprised by its large movement. On November 7, 1940, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge executed its fatal oscillations. The motion was so violent that the massive steel towers were permanently bent out of shape and the bridge had to be dismantled before a replacement bridge could be built.
