ABSTRACT

What can employers do to curb the growth of substance abuse, including drugs and alcohol? This is a critical question to ask because if you haven’t done anything yet, chances are you have a bigger problem than

you realize. Studies reveal that substance abusers as employees have a tremendous effect on the workplace and cost their employers. For example, employees who abuse drugs are less likely to show up to work on time or put in a productive day’s work. They are more likely to be absent from work without a legitimate reason, use their healthcare benefits, and file workers’ compensation claims.
