ABSTRACT

The results presented here demonstrated that the application of polyclonal an tiserum and a nucleic acid counterstain, in combination with scanning confocal laser microscopy, allowed for non-destructive in situ detection of target mi croorganisms (Figure 1) and for quantification of cellular distribution of biofilm depth and time (Figure 2). Accordingly, this method proved to be a useful tool for the assessment of the development of defined biofilms. Further studies are needed to assess the applicability of serological methods in natural biofilms.
