ABSTRACT
To place this freshwater harvest in perspective, one oi ly needs to realize that the 1998 commercial harvest of salmon from Alaska was 713 million pounds. The United States aquaculture trout industry produced 54 million pounds in 1996 (USDA, 1996), and the channel catfish (l. piinctntus) aquaculture industry produced 507 million pounds in 1996 (USDA, 1997).
