ABSTRACT
The ancient Arabs are credited with having devised a unique vegetable tanning-process. The Hebrews discovered oak-bark tanning which was used for many centuries and was still about the only tanning material used in medieval times. Throughout the ancient history of China, Persia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome there are references to leather-making and to its many uses, including those for military purposes.
