ABSTRACT

Four patients with cystic fibrosis developed renal failure following treat ment with ibuprofen and intravenous aminoglycosides.

Pateint 1: A 16-year-old patient receiving maintenance ibuprofen therapy developed nausea and vomiting following six days of intravenous tobramycin for lung disease exacerbation. Furosemide was administered for subsequent peripheral edema and oliguria developed with an increase in serum creatinine compared to admission (2.8 mg/dL vs. 0.5 mg/dL). Two days after discontinua tion of ibuprofen and tobramycin, serum creatinine decreased (0.8 mg/dL), but the patient died nine days later with minimal tubulointerstitial nephritis revealed by autopsy.
