Compactly cespitose plant. Base of stems and short sterile shoots (inE novations) enclosed in long broad stiff sheaths. Leaves convoluted, subuE late. Stems cylindrical, 15-45 cm tall. Inflorescence elliptical or oblong, compound, invariably branched below. Lateral spikelets bisexual (lowerpistillate; 2-3 upper-staminate). Glumes brown, with white membranous margin. Fruit obovate, matte. Stigmas 3.
