ABSTRACT

Aquaculture, or inland water culture, was introduced to the coastal areas of Taiwan in the early 1970s as an alternative to traditional agricultural production. Aquaculture fishermen raised shrimp, eel, tilapia, carp, and milkfish in brackish and freshwater ponds. Because of its higher cash return, aquaculture competed well with agricultural land use in the next two decades; its total production increased from 72,724 metric tons in 1970 to 175,008 in 1980 and 307,756 in 1990.
