ABSTRACT

There are many mountains, rivers, and lakes in Northeast China, as well as a vast plain. The Changbai, Daxing'anling, and Xiaoxing'anling mountain ranges lie in the east, north, and west respectively. Among the three biggest forest areas in China, that in this area is the richest, accounting for about 27.4% of the total forest resource in the country. Reserved forests here account for about 31.0% of the total conservation area in China, thereby improving the environment and protecting

farmland. The Songliao plain in the middle of this area and Sanjiang plain in the east are the central distribution areas of arable land. In the south are the famous grasslands of Songnen, Ke'erxin and Hulunbei'er, the best natural grasslands of China. The sheep's fescue grassland in particular is world famous for its high quality and output of grass. The total grassland area in this region is about 300,000 km2. The vast grassland and farmland offer mutual benefits among regions and resources.
