ABSTRACT

Tokyo, the national capital of Japan and the largest concentration of urban population in the world, is located on the coast of Tokyo Bay. Metropolitan growth has depended greatly on this bay over the past 400 years. The bay has four of the largest ports in Japan, serving the Tokyo metropolitan region in various ways. The coastline has undergone tremendous transformation, largely through landfilling. Urbanization of the Tokyo region is treated geographically here in time sequence, with pertinent maps included for reference.
