ABSTRACT

A variety of specialized skin glands occur in the Urodela (Fig. 9.1). Some of these glands are not sexually dimorphic, but others occur or are seasonally hypertrophied only in males (Brizzi et al. 2001). For only two types of sexually dimorphic glands, mental glands (Houck and Sever 1994; Beachy 1997) and cloacal glands (Sever 1991a; Sever and Brizzi 1998; Brizzi et a l 1996,1999) are enough data available for phylogenetic analysis.
