ABSTRACT
Most manufacturing systems are large, complex, and subject to uncertainty. Obtaining exact feedback policies to run these systems is nearly impossible. It is a common practice to manage such systems in a hierarchical fashion. This chapter surveys a hierarchical control approach for dealing with large-scale manufacturing systems. Various production models and system configurations are discussed. Both the discounted and long-run average cost criteria are considered.
