ABSTRACT
Chapter 5 described the development of waterjets from their initial application in removing the soil cover over valuable mineral deposits, through their use in excavating veins of softer valuable mineral, to mining such materials as china clay and gold bearing sands. Some lessons learned in that development will have equal validity in mining softer rocks discussed in this chapter. They will apply where large volume low pressure flows, such as those commonly used in mining coal, will be discussed.
