ABSTRACT
Ice creeps (for a detailed discussion of the creep of ice, see Hobbs, 1974). Therefore, the word 'permanent' in connection with ice essentially means nonseasonal: that is, ice structures that last for years or decades. In timescales longer than this even the polar ice-caps and glaciers are not truly permanent, but are results of a balance between ice outflow and snow accumulation.
