ABSTRACT
For years the ice covers of rivers and lakes have been used for transportation and water-crossing purposes. More recently, offshore drilling operations in the Arctic regions have considerably increased the interest in the utilization of ice covers for winter roads, airfields and the support of material and equipment for construction. Thickened ice platforms have been used for setting offshore drilling oil rigs. The loading condition can last from a few seconds to weeks and even months.
