ABSTRACT

Professor Horne graduated in engineering at Cambridge University in 1941, returning to Cambridge in 1945 to work with the late Professor J.F. Baker on the development of the plastic theory of steel structures. Following appointments there as an Assistant Director of Research and Lecturer, he was appointed to the Chair of Civil Engineering in the University of Manchester in 1960, retiring in 1983. His main concerns in research have been on the stability problems of steel structures in the elastic–plastic range. He served as the president of the Institution in the year 1980–81.
