ABSTRACT
The CPT equipment consists of a cone penetrometer, pushing equipment and data acquisition systems. The following sections describe each of these. Details on test procedure, calibrations and maintenance are also included in this chapter. It is recommended that whenever possible equipment, procedures and terminology should follow, as a minimum requirement, the International Reference Test Procedure (IRTP) issued by the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering (ISSMFE, 1989). A copy is included in Appendix A. However, it may be appropriate, under certain circumstances (such as in soft clays or for accurate determination of soil parameters) to set stricter requirements than those in the IRTP, and an example of a specification of this type is given in Appendix B.
