ABSTRACT

Significant developments have taken place in recent years regarding in situ testing of soil, especially in the area of the Cone Penetration Test. The developments on the CPT have resulted in the following:

• improvements and standardization of equipment and procedures

• improved accuracy • improved understanding of factors that influence the CPT

measurements • improved understanding of soil behaviour and how it

influences the CPT measurements • improved links between soil behaviour and CPT

interpretation • increased quality and quantity of field performance data

based on CPT • inventive new sensors to add to the standard CPT

equipment • routine use of CPTU in many areas • use of CPT for geo-environmental purposes • use in more and more countries.
