ABSTRACT

The importance of the interfacial transition zone and its influence on the behaviour of concrete has already been highlighted by RILEM with the organisation of an international conference in 1992, Toulouse, and a state-of-the-art report [1]. In the RILEM report, the interfacial zone is described from its microstructure and its properties all the way up to the (possible) influences on the behaviour of concrete as a whole. However, a fundamental explanation for the formation is not given.
