ABSTRACT

In the broadest sense, immunotoxicology can be defined as the science of poisons for the immune system. In laboratory animals, various toxic exposures have indeed been found to induce changes of varying magnitude - essentially decreases - in the weight of lymphoid organs (mainly the thymus, spleen, and lymph nodes), sometimes associated with corresponding disturbances of the normal histological architecture, and also to induce varied functional alterations of the immune response as well as impaired resistance to experimental infections and/or tumours.
