ABSTRACT
When dealing with an ODE of second or higher order, a first step toward obtaining a solution is to reduce the order by one. Such a reduction is warranted even if a further reduction in order cannot be found. The lower-order equation is more amenable to a numerical solution and to analysis, e.g., by phase-plane techniques.
