ABSTRACT
This first session of the workshop was dedicated to experimental results. Two presentations by Mazars et al., and Darwin and Dewey were focused on distributed cracking in concrete and its effect on the macroscopic response of this material, and four contributions by Reinhardt and Hordjik, Torrenti et al., Shah and Maji, and Finno discussed localized failure in concrete and soils. It is noteworthy that the material presented did not only pertain to laboratory size specimens but also to the response of large scale structures. Obviously, the experimental techniques in each of these two cases are different, but it provided the workshop participants with a quite comprehensive overview of "in situ" and "in vitro" experimental techniques.
