ABSTRACT

This paper is based upon a paper recently given by Dr W.Schell.1

We are now close to the 30th anniversary of the pioneering development by Loeb and Sourirajan of asymmetric cellulose acetate (CA) membranes for reverse osmosis (RO).2 These membranes have been the reverse osmosis workhorse for over 15 years, despite many significant new developments. Industrial and consumer applications continue to provide a substantial market for CA reverse osmosis membranes regardless of repeated prophecies that new high-performance synthetic polymers would put CA out of business.
