ABSTRACT
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is commonly seen as a new revolutionary technique which will have far-reaching consequences for the design of nautical control systems in the future. However, given the history of nautical control systems AI rather seems to be the next step in a continuous evolution. AI seems to offer a solution to a number of problems related to the ever-increasing requirements concerning the performance of modern ships.
