ABSTRACT

A series of manoeuvring tests were conducted on a 1/90 scale model of the bulk carrier M.V. FEDERAL HUNTER. The tests simulated the transit of the vessel through a dredged river channel associated with sharp bends and strong current. Although the existing ship is not fitted with thrusters, a side thruster and a larger rudder were fitted on the model to study their importance and effectiveness. This paper gives a description of the test programme, the choice of variables, the data recorded and the resultant analysis. It was concluded that the vessel was capable of navigating the bends, in spite of the strong current, without a larger rudder or side thrusters. However, the benefits of the bow thruster were recognised and it was recommended as an additional navigation aid.
