ABSTRACT

Depending on viscosities and transport distances, either centrifugal or positive displacement pumps will be used for conveying. Helical rotor (Mono type) positive displacement pumps have proved satisfactory for this material, particularly as variable speed units would assist controllability of burner feed (19); centrifugal pumps have also been satisfactorily used. The low pumping velocities will help to minimise abrasion of pumps, pipes and fittings. To reduce the possibilities of settlement and plugging, pipeline systems should contain long radius elbows, conventional tees should be replaced with Y branches and valves need to be of the full flow type. Other aspects of CWM which require further consideration and study are temperature effects on stability and rheology, variations in slurry properties between different suppliers, feed systems and their control.
