ABSTRACT
Steel structures have major advantages when used to span long distances, primarily resulting from the excellent strength to weight ratio of the material. At present steels for structural use also predominate over other metals or composite materials in relation to cost and/ or mechanical properties. It is interesting to note that the record span length for almost all structural types is, at present, held by steel bridges.
