ABSTRACT
In the first stage of the disease the mental functions become disturbed in such a way that the patient can no longer cope alone with his personal and domestic affairs within the cultural and social environment in which he has grown up, lived and worked. This soon leads to problems, both for the patient and for his partner, particularly in the western world with its increasing complexity, its highly individualistic orientation and its ever looser group and family ties.
