ABSTRACT

It is tempting to avoid “the hoary mind-and-matter problem … .” (C.J. Herrick, 1955, p. 60), but the question of how the mind relates to the brain and its expression in consciousness is of such ancient lineage and continuing complexity that it would be inappropriate not to attempt an updating in 20th-century neuroscience. An especial urgency is added by the fact that so many distinguished neuroscientists have reflected on this intimidating challenge.
