ABSTRACT
When we think of energy applications of carbons it is carbon’s use as a fossil fuel that first comes to mind. Carbon is, after all, the major constituent of coal, and other important fossil fuels such as oil and natural gas. However, carbon is the basis of a diverse group of engineering materials which are used, and in some cases, enable energy production, conversion, or storage. The use of graphite in the brushes of electric motors, or carbon anodes in lithium intercalation batteries, are perhaps familiar examples.
