ABSTRACT

The open ocean is a habitat for animals with no hard skeletal parts that propel themselves using muscle-lined tissue to push jets of water. This includes millimeter-scale hydrozoan jellyfish and newly hatched squid to meter-scale giants such as the Lion’s mane jellyfish (Cyanea sp.) and the adult giant squid (Architeuthis sp.). All provide examples for how we might use jet propulsion effectively for underwater vehicles.
