ABSTRACT

If plants arrive from the nursery and cannot be set immediately, they should be unpacked and heeled in by placing the roots in a hole or trench and mounding soil around them. Soak dry root systems in a tub of water or starter fertilizer solution for several hours prior to heeling-in. If the ground is frozen, put the plants in a cool, well-pro tected area, such as an unheated basement or garage, and cover them entirely with damp peat moss or sawdust.
