In the following years, British Rail went through a turbulent patch. strikes interrupted services, like the one July 1 989, which caused
the usual problems, not l east in the metropolitan area. The of the infrastructure was lagging behind, and frequent accidents added to doubts about the quality of British Rail's internal management.
