ABSTRACT
The design of structures and buildings is usually considered in the context of shape, appearance and structural integrity. However, there are other aspects of design, which are less obvious but can nevertheless have an important influence on the overall economics of a structure. The protection against corrosion both initially and over its lifetime accounts for a not inconsiderable part of the overall cost of a structure. Therefore, any aspects of the design that increase costs should be of concern. The purpose of this chapter is to indicate areas where the design itself may adversely affect the performance of coatings or increase the probability of corrosion.
