ABSTRACT
The F o r t h Bridges are among the most famous bridges i n the World. Indeed on completion i n 1890 the R a i l Bridge was described as the E i g h t h Wonder of the World. I t s two c l e a r spans were over 3| times as b i g as any s i m i l a r b r i d g e t h a t had been b u i l t a t t h a t time. The Road Bridge was completed i n 1964 and was the l a r g e s t b r i d g e t o be b u i l t o u t s i d e the USA. Both br i d g e s were major milestones i n the development of Bridge Engineering. The paper describes the design and c o n s t r u c t i o n of b o t h b r i d g e s and h i g h l i g h t s the developments i n s t r u c t u r a l e n g i n e e r i n g achieved i n the c o n s t r u c t i o n of both these s t r u c t u r e s .
