ABSTRACT
The human approach to navigation is to make maps and erect sign posts or use landmarks. Robust navigation in natural environments is an essential capability of smart autonomous aircraft. In general, they need a map of their surroundings and the ability to locate themselves within that map, in order to plan their motion and successfully navigate [208, 210]. Map based navigation requires that the aircraft’s position is always known.
