ABSTRACT
Our overarching goal, recall, is to understand linear transformations, and as we saw in Chapter 1, every linear transformation is represented by a matrix. To progress further toward our goal, not surprisingly, we now need a deeper understanding of matrices. So far, we have used them in two basic ways:
• To represent linear transformations, and • As a notational tool for solving systems with the Gauss-Jordan
algorithm.
